Part II: Network Media and Cabling

Twisted-pair cabling

Twisted-pair cabling was originally used for voice transmissions. Today it is also used for computer networks. Twisted-pair cabling is more economical and easier to install than fiber-optic or coaxial cable.

There are two types of twisted-pair cabling: unshielded twisted pair (UTP) and shielded twisted pair (STP).

UTP is the more commonly used of the two. STP, however, is preferred in environments where attenuation or EMI are potential issues.

STP provides extra protection by way of a coating of insulating material that covers the wires within this cable. But this also raises the cost of STP considerably.
