TOKYO STOCK EXCHANGE
There are a total of
eight stock exchanges in Japan; but the ones in Tokyo,
Osaka, and Nagoya are the
largest.
The TSE is as
monolithic in Japan as the NYSE is in the United States. Around 85% of
trading in Japan (in volume and percent of value) occurs on the TSE.
The Tokyo Stock
Exchange Co. Ltd. was established in 1878. This was during Japan’s
so-called Meiji Era, when industrial and financial institutions in the
country were modernizing. In 1943, the exchange was reorganized as the
Japan Securities Exchange. It finally became the Tokyo Stock Exchange in
1949.
Both Japanese and
foreign company stocks are traded on the Tokyo Stock Exchange.
