CYLINDER SLEEVES
Also called cylinder
liners. Cylinder sleeves are tube-shaped metal inserts that fit into the
cylinder block. In aluminum engine blocks, cast iron sleeves are most
commonly used. There are two types of cylinder sleeves: dry sleeves and
wet sleeves.
Dry sleeves fit into
a cylinder that have been machined to oversized dimensions, or has become
oversized through wear. The sleeve is pressed into the cylinder, then
machined to the correct bore diameter.
Wet sleeves are
thicker than dry sleeves. They are exposed directly to engine coolants.
Wet sleeves are fitted with o-rings to prevent coolant from draining into
the crankcase
