Neptune Facts:

 

  • Neptune is the eighth and outermost planet in the solar system.

 

  • Neptune is a gas giant. It is the fourth-largest planet by diameter and the third-largest by mass. Neptune’s mass is 17 times that of the Earth.

 

  • Neptune is named after the Roman god of the sea.

 

  • Neptune has an atmosphere of mostly hydrogen and helium. There are also traces of methane, which give Neptune its blue appearance.

 

  • On Neptune’s surface, there are violent wind gusts as high as 1,500 mph.

 

  • Neptune was discovered on September 23, 1846 by Urbain Le Verrier and John Couch Adams.

 

  • Neptune likely has a core consisting of molten rock and various metals, surrounded by a soup of rock, ammonia, water, and methane.

 

  • Neptune is very cold; with surface temperatures around −220 °C.
