Neon

Name origin: Greek neos = “new”

Symbol: Ne

Atomic number: 10

Atomic weight = 20.179

- Most people are familiar with neon in its most common commercial application: neon lights. The gas is placed in a glass tube that has electrical connections at both ends. This causes the glass to glow with uniform intensity throughout the entire length of the tube---which can be bent to form letters and other shapes.

-Neon is a noble gas. The noble gases are all relatively inert.

-Neon was discovered by Sir William Ramsay and Morris W. Travers in 1898. The pair had discovered krypton gas earlier the same year.

-Neon is common in the earth’s atmosphere. It is the fourth most abundant element in the universe.
