(Ford Motor Company)

Mustang Facts:

  • The design of the Ford Mustang was originally based on the Ford Falcon.

  • The Ford Mustang was introduced to the public at the New York World's Fair on April 17, 1964.

  • From the early days, the Mustang had a low sticker price and a long options list. Buyers could equip their Mustangs according to preferences and budgetary considerations.

  • During its first year on the market the Mustang was named. Motor Trend Car of the Year. It was also designated as the pace car for the 1964 Indianapolis 500.

  • 1.5 million Mustangs were produced in during the car’s first two years on the market.

  • In the late 1980s, Mustang sales began to fall drastically. Ford thought that the car’s best days were behind it. The company announced that it would replace the rear-wheel drive Mustang with a front-wheel drive coupe of similar design. But Ford was inundated with thousands of letters pleading for a reprieve for the rear-wheel drive Mustang. Ford kept the Mustang, and released the front-wheel car it had been working on as the Probe.
