THE BEECHMONT
CREST GUIDE TO MEDICINAL HERBS AND NUTRACEUTICALS

INTRODUCTION
A
medicinal herb is a plant part (roots, stem, leaves, etc.) that is used
for some medicinal or heath benefit.
Nutraceutical is
a recent term (coined in the 1989 by Dr. Stephen DeFelice). The word is a
combination of "nutritional" and "pharmaceutical." Nutraceuticals are also
known colloquially as “dietary supplements.”
Neutraceuticals are not regulated as drugs by the FDA. This raises questions
about their effectiveness. Manufacturers of nutraceuticals are not required
to prove that their products actually deliver any tangible benefits.
Nutraceuticals include isolated nutrients, as well as prepared foods that
have been “infused” with particular nutrients.
