GINSENG
The ground root of the
ginseng plant has been used for medicinal purposes in China since around 600
A.D. Ginseng is now used throughout the world.
There are two species
of ginseng plant: the American variety and the Asian variety. (The American
ginseng plant is generally milder.)
Ginseng is available as
a dietary supplement in many forms. Ground ginseng is sold in capsule form.
Products such as ginseng teas and colas are also available. (These “ginseng
products” may in fact contain very little ginseng.)
Benefits
Ginseng is believed to
improved mental and physical energy. Some evidence indicates that it reduces
blood sugar, and boosts levels of “good cholesterol” in the blood.
Side Effects
Ginseng has some
qualities which are similar to estrogen. Therefore, it should not be taken
by women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Children should avoid ginseng.
Ginseng may cause
anxiety and irritability, depending on the amount taken, and the sensitivity
of the user.
Ginseng interacts
negatively with aspirin and some anticoagulants.
