Get organized
“A wise man will make more opportunities
than he finds.”
Sir Francis Bacon
Your job search
process will proceed with greater speed and efficiency if you begin with a
mind toward good organization. This means:
Maintain a written
record of your job search activities. Create a list of the companies
to which you will send your resume, and a list of the potential employers
that you have already contacted. During a job search campaign, you will
never be able to keep track of all this information without written notes.
Write down
important follow-up dates. Remember that the “window person” you will
be working with at each company (usually someone in the human resources
department”) is just another mortal who may or may not have good
organization skills. Sometimes these people say they will call you back by
a certain date, but, well—other things come up. If the human resources
manager of Company X promised to call you by Tuesday and it’s now
Thursday, then don’t hesitate to call him yourself.
Pace yourself.
It takes time and effort to land a new job. You can make the task easier
by dividing it up into little chunks, so that you can work on some little
part of it each day.
