Flywheel

A large metal disk that is mounted on the rear of the crankshaft. (The flywheel bolts to the crankshaft flange.) 

Possible functions of the flywheel include:

• Connects the engine crankshaft to the transmission or transaxle (manual or automatic transmission)
• Smoothes the operation of a manual transmission
