Exhaust Manifold
The exhaust manifold
encloses the exhaust port openings. The exhaust manifold is bolted onto
the cylinder head directly over these openings. A gasket fits between the
cylinder head and the exhaust manifold.
The exhaust manifold
is also connected to the exhaust header pipe. (The header pipe transports
exhaust gases to the catalytic converter or muffler.) The connection
between the exhaust manifold and the header pipe is sealed with an O-ring
or gasket.
Cast iron is standard
material for exhaust manifolds. However, high-performance exhaust
manifolds may be constructed of stainless steel or lightweight steel
tubing.
