CREST GUIDE TO MEDICINAL HERBS AND NUTRACEUTICALS
CREATINE
Creatine is an amino
acid that occurs naturally in the body. After being manufactured in the
liver, creatine is subsequently stored in the muscles. Creatine is a source
of muscular energy.
Natural sources of
creatine include milk, red meat, and certain kinds of fish.
Benefits
Creatine is available
as a dietary supplement---usually in a liquid or powder form. Creatine
supplements are often consumed by athletes and bodybuilders who want to tap
creatine as an energy source for more intense workouts. Although the
benefits of creatine have yet to be conclusively proven, some studies
indicate that it can significantly increase the energy available to muscles
for short bursts of activity, such as sprints, or the lifting of a barbell.
Side Effects
The overuse of creatine
can cause dehydration and headaches. The supplement has also been linked to
kidney dysfunction.
