Crankshaft A precision machined part that channels the power produced by the pistons. The crankshaft converts the power from the pistons into rotary motion. The crankshaft consists of the following elements: Crankshaft main journals: Polished surfaces that fit into the main bearings of the engine block. Crankshaft rod journals: Polished surfaces that are offset from the main journals. The connecting rods are bolted to the rod journals. Counterweights: The crankshaft has a series of counterweights which prevent vibration Crankshaft flange: A surface where the flywheel is bolted. Crankshaft snout: A narrow protrusion that fits through the front of the engine block.
