Connecting Rod

The connecting rod links the piston and the crankshaft, and transfers the power of the pistons to the crankshaft.

The connecting rod also moves the piston during the intake, compression and exhaust strokes. (During the power stroke, the piston is driven by the combustion of gases in the cylinder.)

The connecting rod has a large and a small end, both of which have holes. The hole at the large end encircles the crankshaft. The hole at the small end encircles the piston ring.

The connecting rod consists of the following elements:

  • Connecting rod bearings: Bearings that fit between the connecting rods and the crankshaft. These bearings fit atop the crankshaft’s the rod journals. They allow for the pivoting/turning motion between the connecting rods and the crankshaft.

  • Connecting rod cap, bolts, and nuts: These are located at the large end of the connecting rod. They enable the connecting rod to be clamped

  • Connection rod top end: Small end of the connecting rod. Fits around the piston pin.

  • I-beam: The long center section of the connecting rod.
