What if they want a skill that you don’t
have?
Although you should
be aware of what skills and experience the company is looking for before
you interview, you may occasionally be surprised by some new requirements
at the interview itself. (“We were also hoping for a candidate with
experience in procurements from the
China market.”)
As stated in a
previous section of this book, no one has it all, and you needn’t crumble
if the organization has a few items on their wish list that you can’t
deliver at the present time. State that you are a quick study, and that
you would be interested in learning about the additional area which your
interviewer has just mentioned. This reply frames your deficiency as a
temporary hurdle that you will probably overcome quickly—rather than a
monumental obstacle that will prevent you from performing satisfactorily
on the job. In addition, this response presents you as an eager learner
who embraces new challenges.
