ATOMIC
NUMBER AND ATOMIC MASS
The atomic number of an
element equals the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom of that
element. Atomic number is abbreviated as (Z).
The sum of the number of
protons and neutrons in an element is its atomic mass. Atomic mass is
abbreviated as (A).
Symbols for the elements (C
for carbon, H for hydrogen, etc.) are sometimes indicated with the atomic
weight and number in the following form:
